Nifty Tools

I want to share the tools and tips that I use to help the quilting process...especially tshirt quilts. The first is an ironing cloth. A hot iron put directly on the vinyl graphic on a tshirt will melt it. It will ruin the shirt and your iron. So use an ironing cloth to cover the graphics on the shirt when you iron. I will do another post on cleaning your iron later.

The second is to use distilled water in the iron to prevent build up and clogging. Or use a light starch. I found Mary Ellen's Best Press spray at the quilt store.  It is an alternative to starch, light and smells great.

The third tool is a sheet to help glide the material smoothly under the machine. I bought Sewslip Multi-Purpose Quilting Sheet. It static clings to the sewing machine bed and is slippery on top. The Pellon stabilizer on the back of the shirts causes it to gather and bunch during sewing. This sheet prevents that and helps it along smoothly. I had to cut the hole in the sheet a little bigger to fit over my feed dogs better. An added benefit is this sheet helps when free motion quilting!  There is another called Supreme Slider. But I did not like it as well because it did not cling to my machine bed as well as Sewslip does.

Those are some useful tools and tips. I will add more as I come across them. Happy quilting!

2018 Recap Hey guys!  I'm back!  I know I haven't posted a lot this past year.  But it's been an exciting, hectic few years for us as a family.  I've made several quilts that I'm going to blast through.  As I get older, times flies by so fast!  Not a joke.  So all of you youngsters out there, enjoy each day and don't take it for granted! 1.  The most exciting event is m y youngest son got married to a very sweet young lady, Lily.  Their picture is below.  It was the most beautiful, calm, full of love wedding that I've been to.  We had only close family and a few friends.  Aren't they gorgeous! 2.  My husband and I traveled to Italy for two weeks to see my sister and brother in law.  We had a fabulous time!  Italy is beautiful and overwhelmingly full of history! These are some of the best pictures that we took.  Our favorite city to visit was Florence, Italy by far.  We enjoyed walking and roa...

Quilt As You Go

The "quilt as you go" technique is the best thing I was taught since learning how to quilt!  It makes putting together a large quilt more doable.  Basically,  you sew all of the blocks,  quilt each block layer and then piece the layer together. The final quilt ends up with sashing between each block.  So the quilter can have fun with colors.  The navy blue strip is the sashing.  You first zigzag the two blocks together then use the strip to cover up the zigzag connection on the topside and bottom side.   The finished piece is shown below. I usually try to strategize when I sew the blocks together so that I end up with two halves. It makes handling a large quilt easier.

Just in time for graduation!

I finished another graduation quilt!!! It's for a good friend of mine's son. And good thing too. He graduates in two weeks! It's the best one that I've made so far! I did black and gold sashing for Vanderbilt colors. I also embroidered "Vanderbilt university" on top and "Commodores" on the bottom border. The finished quilt is 96 inches wide x 130 inches long.  You may be wondering why it's so long. Nick is 6 foot 7 inches tall. So it should cover him nicely! Happy quilting y'all!
