Nifty Tools

I want to share the tools and tips that I use to help the quilting process...especially tshirt quilts. The first is an ironing cloth. A hot iron put directly on the vinyl graphic on a tshirt will melt it. It will ruin the shirt and your iron. So use an ironing cloth to cover the graphics on the shirt when you iron. I will do another post on cleaning your iron later.

The second is to use distilled water in the iron to prevent build up and clogging. Or use a light starch. I found Mary Ellen's Best Press spray at the quilt store.  It is an alternative to starch, light and smells great.

The third tool is a sheet to help glide the material smoothly under the machine. I bought Sewslip Multi-Purpose Quilting Sheet. It static clings to the sewing machine bed and is slippery on top. The Pellon stabilizer on the back of the shirts causes it to gather and bunch during sewing. This sheet prevents that and helps it along smoothly. I had to cut the hole in the sheet a little bigger to fit over my feed dogs better. An added benefit is this sheet helps when free motion quilting!  There is another called Supreme Slider. But I did not like it as well because it did not cling to my machine bed as well as Sewslip does.

Those are some useful tools and tips. I will add more as I come across them. Happy quilting!

My birthday present! A Babylock Unity!

I was pretty frustrated with my quilting machine! I have had an Elna Quilter's Pro 7200 for almost 10 years now.  It has been a great machine and we have created many beautiful quilts with it.  But,  the time had come for a new machine. After looking through reviews and watching YouTube videos and playing with machines at the sewing center,  I bought a floor model Husqvarna Topaz 30. I was so excited.  It could embroider,  it could quilt....I went home feeling good because I got a good deal on it.  But my excitement was short lived.  The first time I tried to embroider on it,  the bobbin decided to eat thread!  What did I do wrong?! So I emailed my sales lady,  and she gave me pointers.  I got it to embroider a few things,  but I kept fighting that hungry bobbin!  It kept eating thread. I took it back a few times,  but still no luck.  My wonderful,  understanding husband suggested I trade it in on a ...
2018 Recap Hey guys!  I'm back!  I know I haven't posted a lot this past year.  But it's been an exciting, hectic few years for us as a family.  I've made several quilts that I'm going to blast through.  As I get older, times flies by so fast!  Not a joke.  So all of you youngsters out there, enjoy each day and don't take it for granted! 1.  The most exciting event is m y youngest son got married to a very sweet young lady, Lily.  Their picture is below.  It was the most beautiful, calm, full of love wedding that I've been to.  We had only close family and a few friends.  Aren't they gorgeous! 2.  My husband and I traveled to Italy for two weeks to see my sister and brother in law.  We had a fabulous time!  Italy is beautiful and overwhelmingly full of history! These are some of the best pictures that we took.  Our favorite city to visit was Florence, Italy by far.  We enjoyed walking and roa...

Another member of the family

We all love our kids and want to keep those old baby clothes.  I've made a couple of memory quilts with old kids clothes.  I need to post pictures of the last one I did because I made a huge boo boo.  But my quick thinking husband helped me figure a fix.  That's not what I want to write about now.  I want to write about our pets.  Our other kids that we love.  The ones that don't talk back and actually listen to you. A good friend of mine lost her beloved dog.  He was a great dog and she took him to a lot of shows.  He was her baby.  So she was very, very sad when he passed.  She asked me to make a ribbon quilt out of his old show ribbons. Ribbon quilt?!  What is that?!  I have never heard of that before.  And I've been quilting a LONG time!  So I Pinterest-ed (is that a word???  It is now.) it.  And there are beautiful ribbon quilts out there. She gave me three boxes of ribbons and a few of her f...
